Stretch packaging is a stretchable plastic tape that is
wrapped over a load of items that allows it to be stretched; this elasticity
keeps the load closely together.
During transport, the stretch wrapping machine prevents
them from moving and rotating, which is a significant source of damage. There
are obviously other ways to destroy loads during shipping, but stretch wrap machine provides a measure of
security that improves the likelihood of delivery of the "as made"
condition. This implies lower returns, administration responsibilities,
receiver, and rework expenditures credit.
Ways to apply a stretch wrap machine.
There are three options for a pallet of items to add
stretch wrap: manual, semi-automatic stretch wrapper, or automatic high-speed
stretch wrapper.
Hand wrapping depends on individuals to physically extend
a load, as the name suggests. The film is fixed to the pallet by a worker and
then the film travels around the load.
Wrapping a heavy roll of film around a pallet is
physically taxing, especially if performed correctly. In a humid factory,
imagine the horrible dizzy sensation. Generally, hand wrapping has the highest
production expense because film usage is not standardized because there is no
significant pre-stretch. It is also very difficult to reliably wrap up a
safe-to-ship load
Two separate system types are available for
semi-automatic stretch wrappers: turntable and straddle. The load is located on
or in the wrapping region of the stretch wrappers and stretch film is added.
Turntable models spin the load on a turntable, while there is a wrapped arm for
straddle type models that pass around the load and apply the film.
High speed automated stretch wrappers are similar to
semi-automatic types in that the direct stretch wrapping of a load is done by a
computer. Automatic stretch wrap machine, however,
usually require input and output conveyors to cycle loads through the system
automatically.
When stretching packaging, it is important not to miss
steps that protect the pallet load. One alternative is to cover the pallet all
the way down to the floor. Though, runs the risk of film infiltration from forklifts
or pallet jacks as the load is collected. Such large punctures to the film can
propagate up the load, causing a loss of containment force and increasing the
risk for load failure.
