Packaging purposes and types

Packaging is a method or technology for enclosing a product for better protection, sale, distribution and use. Various materials are used in the packaging. The selection of these materials depends on the nature of the product and size. It is done to facilitate the transportation of products and good to large areas for distribution in original manufactured conditions. On the packaging material, the details of the product, its ingredients, formula, manufacturing date, expiry date and precautions if any, etc are printed.

Purposes of packing are to give protection to the products or goods. This is the primary function and aim of the packaging. Depending on the product, the material of packaging gives protection from shock, vibrations, physical damage, scratches and dents. The packaging materials use will depend on the kind of protection that is needed for that particular product. For example, the electronics and fragile products are packed with thick foam sheets for absorbing shocks and vibration.

Another aim of packaging is to keep moisture, oxygen or water away from product. The medicines are packaged in such a way that external weather conditions do not affect them till their use .Some medicine packs are packed with oxygen absorbers to extend the life of the medicines.
